The Perth Mint is one of the biggest names in precious metals and all numismatic fans have a soft spot for these coin specialists. That’s because they have released a number of hugely popular gold and silver coins over the years, coins that are valued for their exceptional designs as well as their quality finishes. And with the Platinum Platypus, Australian’s oldest mint have managed to instill those same values into a platinum coin.

This coin was first introduced in 2011 and it quickly sold out. In the years that followed, the Perth Mint introduced an unlimited mintage, ensuring everyone could own what has quickly become one of the most popular and sought-after platinum coins on the market.

Product Details

The star of the show here is the platypus, which is endemic to Eastern Australia and to Tasmania in particular. This unusual animal has captivated artists, writers and explorers for hundreds of years, and when it was first discovered by Europeans back in the 18th century, few of them could believe what they saw. In fact, zoologist Robert Knox was convinced that someone was playing a joke on him and that the animal was the result of creative taxidermy, with someone stitching the beak of a duck onto the body of a beaver.

The Perth Mint has a history of showcasing the natural wonders and curiosities of Australia, keen to show the beauty and diversity of this unique ecosystem to the world. And this platypus, which is depicted swimming through the sea, is the deserved star of this platinum coin.

The 2016 Platinum Platypus is struck to a Brilliant Uncirculated standard and has an unlimited mintage.

Features

The reverse of the 2016 Platinum Platypus features a Platypus, and although the Perth Mint usually change the design of their coins from year to year, this design has remained the same since the coin’s release in 2011. The same goes for the Queen’s portrait on the obverse. This portrait was created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley and has featured on many other Perth Mint coins.

The 2016 Platinum Platypus has a face value of $100 and it bears the “P” mint mark. As is often the case with Perth Mint creations, the inscriptions have been kept to a minimum with the words “Elizabeth II” and “Australia” accompanying the face value on the obverse, and the words “Austral-ian Platypus” and “2016” accompanying the purity and weight on the reverse.
